Weekly Wrap Up: AC/DC, Jane’s Addiction, Scott Weiland, Rivers Cuomo
I’m feeling a little hungover from a Guns N’ Roses binge this week, so let’s have a quick look at what else is going on in the music world.
AC/DC and their exclusive partnership with Wal-Mart seems to be paying off. The band’s latest album, Black Ice, sold 193,000 copies on it’s first day of release, which was on October 20. The album is expected to sell around 800,000 copies by the end of it’s debut week. So far, Black Ice, is outpacing the Eagles Long Road Out of Eden, which was also a Wal-Mart exclusive. While I don’t like this exclusive deal, or Wal-Mart, it’s working for AC/DC. But, I don’t think too many other bands can pull this off. Let’s hope this doesn’t become a trend.
AC/DC Announce North American Tour
The legendary Aussies have announced the first leg of their world tour, which is their first since 2001.
AC/DC will kick things off on October, 28 in Wilkes-Barre, PA an will end this first leg on December, 18 in Charlotte, NC. The tour will be in support of the band’s upcoming release Black Ice, which will be released exclusively through Wal-Mart on October 20. Tickets will begin going on sale September 20 through Ticketmaster, as if there is another choice.
AC/DC will also hit South America, Asia and Europe sometime next year. The band will then be heading back to North America for a summer stadium tour.
AC/DC Streaming New Single “Rock N’ Roll Train”
AC/DC are currently streaming their first single “Rock N’ Roll Train” from their upcoming album Black Ice via the band’s official site. You can also expect to hear the track on radio airwaves sometime today.
Black Ice will be released on October 20 as a Wal-Mart exclusive. You can expect to see Wal-Mart doing all sorts of AC/DC activities as the release date approaches, so if you shop there and are a fan, keep your eyes and ears open.
Fred Wilson & Bob Leftsetz on AC/DC & WalMart
Just caught this great quote by Fred Wilson discussing a Bob Leftsetz post about the deal AC/DC is making with Wal Mart.
Here is a quote from Fred:
My son Josh loves AC/DC but if it’s not on iTunes, it’s not going to get on his iPod. Clearly AC/DC and/or their manager is in the category of clueless.A VC, Jun 2008
First, check out Bob Lefsetz original post so you know about what’s going on with AC/DC and Wal-Mart.
I agree with both of these guys on why this is a stupid idea.
