Background:
Growing up in little suburbia in southern New Jersey, my parents worked hard to make sure the heat was on and that food was on the table, and this work ethic has stuck with me into my adult years – I’m a work-a-holic.
It was during my teenage years that I continued my interest in the arts and developed an strong interest in music and film, deciding while in high school to pursue a college degree in film studies. It was also during these years that I began a strong observation of those who were successful in media (such as Todd McFarlane of Spawn fame, and film-business mogul legend George Lucas).
For financial reasons (despite a rather nice scholarship to Drexel), I chose to enroll in a local community college. That didn’t last long. The summer after high school I had the proverbial epiphany – I would pursue my film and arts career only after I had the financial means to do so – from starting my own successful business.
Now, at the time, I was obviously young and naive, thinking one could start a business without any financial capital or even knowing what it was this supposed business was going to do. This obviously led to a few years of soul searching and lots of silly part time jobs and get-rich-quick schemes (thank you, late-night infomercials!)
In 2003, I moved in with a friend who also shared a mindset of wanting to control his own destiny, and together we began researching e-commerce as a low-cost way to get something rolling. While he quickly bowed out as a realistic candidate, I on the other hand began heading down the path I would eventually embrace, one that has put me in a very lucrative career today.
I began to study, privately, almost every aspect of business on the web – from learning basic principles of web design and development, marketing strategies of permission and affiliate marketing, search engine optimization, and learning how to build brands and monetize intellectual property, and dove into a sea of research that led me to build several different businesses over the next few years.
As of 2011, I have become a bit of an expert in these and other areas, as marketing online has continued to grow with the development of creating content through blogging, social media and networking, and using web-based tools for project management and communication. I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with business professionals from all over the world and have built a very educated and impressive resume of skills that have been applied through thousands of hours of hard work and study.
Business & Management
Project Management & Communication
Understanding that gone are the days of just jotting down ideas in a black marble journal, whiteboard Monday meetings, and desk calenders. The way to properly communicate and brainstorm with a team, delegate tasks, and share files is through professional web applications like Gmail and Basecamp. I’d be lost (as well as my clients and partners) without these and other tools to help us get projects off the ground. In addition, use of other web-based communication tools (think IM and Skype) are part of my everyday activities.
Leadership & Team Building
I’ve developed a lot of my leadership skills in my years of work in the restaurant world – I had to pay the bills somehow while building my empire.
I’ve learned how to get the respect from just about every employee that ever walked through the door. I’ve learned when to be friendly with staff and when to push down hard to get things done and get them done right. And to this day I can stand proud knowing that staff cared about me as much as I cared about them, and that they held me in high regard for my expertise, advice, and dedication.
Advanced Computer Knowledge
It’s not a question of whether or not I have basic computer skills. Of course I can type, use Excel, and most other general computer programs and applications. However, when you run your own business from a home PC, there’s no IT department to call in for favors when something goes wrong. I know my way around Windows and all of it’s shortcomings, keeping things safe and secure, and am always the go-to-guy when someone needs networking help, a laptop cleaned out, or god forbid a re-install. I also have experience with some Linux (Ubuntu mostly), the open-source software movement, and mobile technology.
Creative Thinking
Something that I find isn’t looked at enough is one that in the end makes me shine, and that would be my creative thinking processes. If you’re reading this now, you already know I think outside of the box, and it’s this very same thinking that has helped me and my clients create great things over the years. More importantly, in this very fast paced and evolving web economy, you’re going to need someone who can think quick and think different if you want to stand out from the crowd.
Customer Service & Support
As I mentioned before, I’ve spent many years working in the front of the house of a busy restaurant, and it was there that I developed the patience needed to deal with disgruntled people. I’ve mastered the art of finding out what problem a customer has, and even if I couldn’t provide a solution, be able to properly communicate information in order to make that customer feel they were in good hands.
Marketing & Advertising
Search Engine Marketing & Optimization
Understanding how Google works is one of my “flagship” consulting services. I have spent the last 5+ years working in various departments of SEO, and more importantly spent the most time in the hardest department of the art – gaining valuable backlinks to your website. I am fluent in SEO-language, on-site SEO design, competitor research and analysis, and again a certified “link ninja”.
Social Media & Networking
SEO and social media go hand-in-hand these days, so as social media has exploded over the past few years, so has my research and skill in using it. I have held positions as lead editor of a number of websites, writings, editing, and developing viral content for clients. I’m also a heavy user of social media in all it’s forms and advancements, and know how to properly use them to enhance one’s web presence.
Branding, PR, & Reputation Management
From copyrights to product naming, packaging, and development, I have a knack for building a brand not only in the traditional sense (design, demographics, usp) but also in web-branding. The web has made business transparent, and if you’re not building a bridge between you and your customers, then something’s not right. In addition, knowing what people are saying about you (and where that information is) can assist you in keeping your brand’s integrity.
Web & Design & Development
Web Programming
Let’s get this straight – I’m not a programmer. I can’t write a lot of code from scratch. What I can so id READ code, hack code, and understand what the code is doing. I’m fluent in understanding basic HTML and am pretty good with working with PHP, and have a little knowledge of other languages like Javascript and JQuery.
Content Management Systems
About 99% of the websites I have built over the past 5 years have been using the open-source WordPress content management system. I am now an expert in the software, hacking it’s code, it’s extensive plug-in library, locating and installing themes, and in migration and security. I am also familiar with some other CMS’s like Drupal, but my heart lies with WordPress.
Blogging
In addition to my writing and editing duties for various clients, I have 5 years of blogging experience under my belt. Anyone can stat a blog but few know what it takes to properly build and engage an audience. In addition to knowing how to write, edit, and format posts, I am an expert in doing the necessary research for not only topic discovery but also networking with similar blogs to increase readership and interaction.
Design
As with my programming skills, I am not a professional web or graphic designer – I can read and hack CSS, am pretty good with Photoshop, and do have an art background that helps me in making design decisions and my skills get better everyday. I have a natural eye for design and know when I can or cannot accomplish something visually in various mediums.
