Them Crooked Vultures Debut Lean, Mean Rock Album
This past summer, a certain performance, at a smaller venue in Chicago, managed to steal the thunder that Lollapalooza typically brings to the city and the music world.
That performance was the debut of Them Crooked Vultures at the Metro on August 9.
In a year of super groups, like Chickenfoot and Monsters of Folk, TCV has to be the sickest. Comprised of Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) and Dave Grohl (Nirvana/Foo Fighters), these guys were, and are, part of some of the biggest and baddest bands of the 70’s, 90’s and 00’s.
Since that August debut, the band has been on the road tearing things up in Europe and North America in support of their self-titled debut album.
After hoaxes, like the album being released on October 23, and little teasers thrown up on YouTube, and giving away the track “Mind Eraser, No Chaser” on iTunes, the wait is finally over.
But, is the album actually worth it?
Wait, was that actually a question? Of course it is.
In a nutshell, the album sounds like a lean, mean, update of Queens of the Stone Age. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Josh Homme proves that he really has a diverse vocal range, and is completely capable of fronting a band larger than anything he’s done before.
John Paul Jones is having the time of his life. He’s really the strongest part of the trio, and is finally getting a chance to shine in the spotlight. He’s finally able to breakout from the shadows of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and the late John Bonham. Simply put, the dude is a beast.
Dave Grohl on drums is always an added bonus. Just watch some clips of him pounding away on the skins for TCV, and you’ll be reminded of Animal from The Muppet’s.
Together these friends have created a well oiled machine that can stand toe to toe with any other super group…ever.
So, do yourself a favor, and don’t miss out on Them Crooked Vultures. You’ll thank me later.
