Radiohead Giving Away New Song “These Are My Twisted Words”

We really like Radiohead here at Evolvor.

Obviously they make great music, but they’re also proving to be innovators in the new state of the music industry. With the release of “These Are My Twisted Words,” the band is proving that giving something away gets a lot of buzz.

The story began last week when a mysterious new Radiohead song had been leaked on some torrent sites. No one knew were it came from and the band was mum. The MP3 was even accompanied by some ASCII art that dropped some hints about the song’s origins and future, like naming today’s date. While questions were rising, there was no doubt that it was a new Radiohead song.

So now fans were going a little crazy. Some were speculating that “These Are My Twisted Words” would be a track on the rumored EP Wall of Ice and that it would be released today.

Instead, fans were greeted this morning by a blog entry from guitarist Jonny Greenwood on the band’s official site which officially announced “These Are My Twisted Words” as a Radiohead track. Better yet was that the band would giving it away for free.

All this seems pretty clever to me. Lots of people, and I agree, believe that the band leaked the song themselves. It got some buzz last week when it leaked and now will only get bigger since it will be given away. A very simple plan to get your fans on board for the future.

In case you haven’t heard, Radiohead may be taking a break from recording full length albums. Frontman Thom Yorke recently said that the band will be focusing on singles and EP’s instead, since he’s apparently always hated CD’s. He also went on to say that CD’s kept the “industry alive like a zombie”.

I would expect to be seeing more Radiohead singles in the near future. I would also expect to see them as the pioneers in a new age of the music industry, which seems to actually be like the way things were back in the day when singles, not albums, were released.

I know bands like the Smashing Pumpkins have talked about doing the same thing, but Radiohead have beat them to the punch. I can’t wait to see what Radiohead, and peer/reveal, Trent Reznor will do next to up the ante.
