Airborne Toxic Event – “Sometime Around Midnight”

If you just so happen to still listen to alternative stations, whether on FM or satellite, you’ve probably heard “Sometime Around Midnight” by Airborne Toxic Event. Not a revolutionary song, but it’s catchy and a breath of fresh air on radio. And, it gets stuck in your head.

What I really like about this song, and band for that matter, is how they came out of basically nowhere.

Killers Working on Covers Album

The Killers concertWith Day & Age only a few months old, The Killers are already planning their next release. Drummer Ronnie Vannucci recently told Q that the band will be working on a covers album.

Each member of the band will be choosing three tracks to cover, Vannucci has chosen Rod Stewarts’ “Young Turks” and, tracks by Genesis and Tom Waits. No other info on what the other guys are eying up just yet.

You may be thinking how are the guys going to record this album with current touring obligations? Very simple. Vannucci has landed some on-the-road recording equipment, so they can obviously record the tracks while their on tour, which is very cool.

Cubane’s debut, C8H8, Set To Blow Up Your Speakers This Weekend

With a surprisingly warm Friday to start off the weekend, and because I’m just hours away from seeing Scott Weiland at the TLA, I’m in a pretty rocking mood.

Also might be because I’ve been checking out the new debut album from Newark, Delaware’s very own Cubane, entitled C9H8.

The band will be playing a local hometown show to release the album tomorrow, so it’s only fitting that I send you off with some tunes to check out over the weekend. The album should be available digitally very soon, so be sure to check out the Cubane site or MySpace page for updates.

Pushing & Pulling Music Discovery: Which Are You Focused On?

There is quite an interesting discussion over at the Music Think Tank that everybody in the music biz needs to give a read, perhaps even twice: 2009 – The Pull Music Paradigm Shift Emerges.

In the article, Bruce Warila discusses the Push VS Pull mentality that is currently at odds with each other in the war over the traditional music business and the new digital realm of music discovery.

Here’s a bit of a breakdown over some of the underlying principles that Bruce is talking about:

Alice in Chains: In the Studio Book to Spotlight Your Band!

If you didn’t already know, Alice in Chains are going to release a new studio album sometime this year. This will be the band’s first studio album since 1996′s self-titled release, and will also be the first without Layne Staley.

Besides the new album, which I can’t wait for, Rock N’ Books will be releasing “Alice in Chains: In the Studio” book. The book should be coming out in the fall and will focus on the writing and recording of previous AIC albums and hits.

Morrissey Releases New Video for “Throwing My Arms Around Paris”

Here’s something that may warm you up on this bitterly cold day, I know it defiantly will for Eric.

Morrissey has posted a new video for “I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris” from his upcoming album Years of Refusal, which comes out February 16.

It’s a pretty plan video, but the song is utterly catchy and a typical Morrissey track, with lines like “Nobody wants my love”.

Radiohead – “Nude”

So I finally got a copy of Radiohead‘s In Rainbows for Christmas, and after a few spins I can say that I’m utterly addicted to the track “Nude”.

While the song may not blow people’s minds at first, it’s one of the band’s best because of it’s simplistic sweetness. Thom Yorke’s vocals are stellar as he utters “Don’t get any big ideas…they’re not gonna happen”. Meanwhile, the rest of the band backs Yorke up brilliantly with some smooth bass and drum work behind a hypnotic guitar, proving that they are the best band around. Let’s face it, these guys are our generations Beatles. Oh yeah, the song is flawless live as well, see for yourself

Understanding Your Circles of Fans And How to Build A Real “Street Team”

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how I’ve become a “super-fan” of many bands that I listen to. There are so many that I consistently talk about to friends and co-workers; whether I burn a CD for a friend, share a link, dedicate a song on Facebook, or drag a friend to a show, I am a very influential in my circle when it comes to introducing new people to music.

They are probably 3-4 other people in my circle that are on my level of music devotion – we pretty much run the show when it comes to what everyone else listens to.

Pearl Jam ‘Ten’ Re-release

Ten album coverAs probably many of you have heard, Pearl Jam will be re-releasing their 1991 debut album Ten on March 24, 2009. The band will be re-releasing the album in four different formats, basically ranging from a package for the causal fan to a package for the uber die hard PJ fan who is willing to go bankrupt for the band.

Here’s how the packages will differ, courtesy of Pearl Jam’s official site.

When Will Chris Cornell’s ‘Scream’ Be Released?

If you’ve been keeping up to date with Chris Cornell‘s third solo Scream, then you know that this album is starting to get a little like Chinese Democracy.

OK, it’s not as bad as Axl making fans wait for over a decade, but Scream was supposed to come out on October 14, 2008. Then it received a November 4 release date, which was changed due to Election Day. After realizing that this album wasn’t going to be released in 2008, the new release date was then moved to February 3. Although, I’m a little nervous when I notice that album is listed as March 10, on most notably Best Buy. However, most sites have gone back to the February 3 date, although Amazon states that “a release date as not yet been set for this title”.

RIP Ron Asheton: The Stooges – 1969

The Stooges album cover2009 has the potential to be an historic year, especially with the inauguration of Barack Obama on January 20. However, I’m sure that a lot of people will look back and celebrate the fortieth anniversaries of the moon landing, Woodstock, the assassination of Bobby Kennedy and the end of The Beatles. There will also be a look back at the Vietnam War and the anti-war demonstrations, which would include John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s bed-in and “Give Peace A Chance”.

1969 was also the debut of David Bowie with “Space Oddity” and album debuts from Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley & The Wailers, and The Stooges.
