A Very 90’s Christmas

Since December 24 is here in a week, wow where did the time go? I decided to do an extended song of the week, or should I say songs of the week.

For some unknown reason Christmas time just makes me feel all tingly inside, just a good 90’s track. So here’s a glimpse of some classic Christmas tunes done 90’s style.

Pearl Jam – “Someday At Christmas”
: I know I’m biased, but the guys absolutely kick ass on this Stevie Wonder track. You can listen, and even download, the song right here.

Chris Cornell – “Ave Maria”
: I’ve talked about this gem a lot, because it’s fucking sweet. Before Euphoria Morning came out, Chris teamed up with Eleven on A Very Special Christmas Vol. 3 and proved he was more than the scream in Soundgarden. You check it out right here.

Smashing Pumpkins – “Christmastime”: Another track from A Very Special Christmas Vol. 3. Probably not really that memorable, but since this time of year makes even Billy Corgan sound not as bitchy, I’ll throw it in here. This animated video cracked me up.

Weezer – “The Christmas Song”: Just because it’s Christmas doesn’t mean that Rivers has to be happy. What else would we expect from Weezer?

Stone Temple Pilots – Christmas Time Is Here”: I love Peanuts. I love STP. So this live rendition is an all time favorite. You can listen to it at STP’s MySpace page.

Barenaked Ladies ft. Sarah McLachlan – “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings”: Here’s an idea. Let’s team up two of the bigger Canadian acts from the 90’s and do a lil Christmas medley. Hmm, seems to work for me.

R.E.M. – “Christmas Griping”
: OK, not exactly a 90’s act, but close enough. Besides. this cut from the band’s 1991 holiday fan club single is priceless.

Flaming Lips – “Christmas At The Zoo”
: This track appeared on the Lips 1996 album Clouds Taste Metallic. Basically, the song is about freeing animals at the zoo on Christmas Eve. Man, those Flaming Lips are crazy!

Scott Weiland – “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas”: Back in December of 2007, when Scott was still in Velvet Revolver, he stopped by the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and delivered a beautiful rendition of this classic.

Pearl Jam – “Let Me Sleep”: I like symmetry, so let’s end with Pearl Jam. “Let Me Sleep” is an original tune and was featured on the band’s first ever holiday single in 1991. It even appeared on the bands rarities album Lost Dogs. The song seems pretty straight forward, adult realizes that the childhood magic of Christmas is gone, so just him sleep. Did you go that site for “Someday At Christmas”? If so, then you already saw “Let Me Sleep” there. If not, then you should defiantly go there.
