Butch Vig Producing New Green Day Album

The Green Day Authority reported earlier today that Butch Vig is on board to produce Green Day’s upcoming album.

Does the name Butch Vig ring a bell?

Hopefully it does. He’s the drummer from Garbage, but he’s also a pretty well known producer. He just so happened to produce a little album entitled Nevermind back in 1991. More recently he’s produced albums for some newer acts like Jimmy Eat World, Against Me!, AFI and The Subways.

There had apparently been rumors about Vig producing this album, but it pretty much got official when Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson let the cat out of the bag during an appearance on Last Call With Carson Daly.

With Vig attached to the project, it looks like Green Day’s long term producer Rob Cavallo is out of the picture. Rob Cavallo had produced pretty much everything from Dookie on.

The new Green Day album is slated for a 2009 release.

Hmm. I don’t know what I’m more excited about. The fact that Butch Vig is producing a Green Day, or the fact that a new Green Day album is coming out in 2009.

It’s already been four years since American Idiot was released, so it’s about time for Green Day to release a new album. And sorry, but the Foxboro Hot Tubs don’t count.

Anyways, teaming up with Vig just seems all too good. There is no doubt in my mind that Nevermind is the classic album that is because of the production by Vig. Having a great producer with a great band is always a good thing.
