Know What Your Priorities Are, Kids
I usually do not get on my soapbox too much over here at evolvor; my focus has always been to discuss how to promote yourself online, using tips and tricks and how-tos and methods you haven’t yet heard of. Today, were going to forget about marketing for a change and address an issue that every musician or artist needs to tackle, before they set out on that long road to success.
The question here revolves around the word “success“, and what it means to all of us. If you have a goal in mind, is it really the one you want to go after? Will it make you happy?
What is your definition of success?
Many who set out to obtain a career in the music business think of money and fame as the two predominant notions of what success is. Others beg to differ. I will tell you personally that money is by no means a definition of success. Think of all the rockers out there who put bullets in the brains or needles in their arms. Do you consider these guys and gals successful?
The reason I ask this question correlates with the state of the music biz. Many are throwing around these notions of giving away the music for free, and reaping the rewards of touring and merchandising as a way to make a living. Are you in it for just the money, or are you in it because you want to play music all over the world and get paid to do so?
I’m telling you right now, you’re way better off just giving it away. You’ll be a lot happier with yourself, your lifestyle, and the acclaim you’ll receive. I’m not saying you have to do it forever, but when starting out, that’s the way to go. Get yourself out there, build your fan base, let everybody hear it – then the money will come.
Success is about enjoying what you’re doing with your life, and only you can define what that is.
