Pearl Jam – Eddie Vedder

Pearl Jam’s outspoken frontman that loves surfing, wine, the Cubs, the Ramones, The Who and the ukulele. No need to stress his importance to the band.

Eddie received a demo tape of music by Jeff, Stone and Mike from mutual friend ,and former RHCP drummer, Jack Irons in 1990. Eddie then put lyrics to the music; this included Alive, Once, and Footsteps. Eddie left San Diego and headed up to Seattle to audition for the band. Before Eddie even got the job, he contributed on Temple of the Dog tracks, such as Hunger Strike, Wooden Jesus and Pushin Forward Back. Pearl Jam was soon to follow, and as they say, the rest is history.

Microsoft Surface

surface.pngJust caught a glimpse of some revolutionary technology that’s about to come our way.

It’s being called Microsoft Surface, and when it creeps into our lives, it will change the way with interact with computers forever. If you’ve ever seen the movie Minority Report, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

I remember seeing some videos of this technology last year at a conference, but was unaware that Microsoft was involved or was actually marketing it. Word on the street is that the first units will hit in Winter ‘07. Start saving for one now.

Jeff Buckley – Ten Years Gone

jeffbuckley.GIFUnfortunately today marks the 10th anniversary of the death of musician Jeff Buckley.

Jeff Buckley was one of the most unique artists from the 90’s.

Words can not describe the passion he delivered through his music. I believe that people are here for a reason, and Jeff was here to make music. If you don’t own his 1994 masterpiece Grace, then that’s a shame. It’s a must have for any music fan.

Check out jeffbuckley.com to see a listing of tribute events coming up.

We’ll be celebrating Jeff’s music during the first week of June, but for now enjoy his well known cover of Hallelujah.

The Hardest Part Of Marketing Art

So I just got off the phone with a buddy of mine who I’ve known for quite some time. He’s an artist, and in many different ways. For years we’ve talked about working together, and last November, we really sat down and talked about getting some of his stuff online.

After a few months, the project came together as a clothing company. I began doing research on the target audience, pouring over magazines and websites for potential partners (I have hundreds), began developing a website, and we began to discuss the ins and outs of a possible business plan.

Pearl Jam – Jack Irons & Matt Cameron

Funny how things in life are so interconnected and we see that with Pearl Jam’s next set of drummers.

Jack Irons replaced Dave A. in 94′ and performed on Mirror Ball (The album PJ did with Neil Young), No Code and Yield. He also also wrote or co-wrote tracks that include: Who You Are, In My Tree, Red Dot or Untitled (from Yield), Happy When I’m Crying (from the 1997 X-Mas single) and Whale Song, which Irons also sings.

What is a Copyright?

copyrightSo yesterday we discussed what intellectual property is.

How do we go about protecting that property?

The government has a website set up to help us with answering that question. According to copyright.gov, a copyright is defined as:

“Copyright is a form of protection provided by the laws of the United States (title 17, U. S. Code) to the authors of “original works of authorship,” including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works. This protection is available to both published and unpublished works”.

So what can you copyright? Well, your intellectual property of course! Here’s some examples of what can be copyrighted:

Pearl Jam – Dave Krusen & Dave Abbruzzese

Before Pearl Jam, the band called themselves Mookie Blaylock and they became complete with the addition of Dave Krusen on drums. Dave Krusen was only around for Ten and then he was gone. Since departing PJ, Dave Krusen has been pretty active playing with bands such as Hovercraft, Unified Theory, Cheyenne Kimball and Candlebox. Word on the street is that he’s working on a solo album.

Check out Unified Theory – The Sun Will Come

After Dave K. left, Matt Chamberlin came in and then left shortly afterward to join the Saturday Night Live Band.

Understanding Intellectual Property

brain01.jpgIf you’re planning on selling and promoting that music you just recorded, you better put everything down and really soak up some of the concepts we are going to discuss today, for they could save you quite a bit of trouble and money down the road.

Unless of course you want someone to steal your songs, lyrics, artwork, and ideas.

I didn’t think so! So in order to protect yourself, you’ll need to understand what intellectual property is.

Intellectual Property – Everything you create, whether it be a song, lyric, drawing, concept – these are known as intellectual properties.

Pearl Jam – Mike McCready

Sir Mike MCCready doesn’t need much of an introduction. Hands down he is one of the greatest guitar players of this generation. He first grabbed our attention when he was part of Temple of the Dog. He rules on Reach Down.

Mike is the backbone of Pearl Jam. Besides being an amazing guitarist, his live performances are electric. His bluesy improvs never disappoint fans.

mike.pngMike and Eddie are a force to reckon with. The duo seem to have the legendary singer/guitarist connection down. They performed Masters of War at the 1993 tribute concert for Bob Dylan, as well as Yellow Ledbetter on the Tibetan Freedom Concert album and The Long Road (with Neil Young) on America: A Tribute to Heroes.

NPR on MySpace Music Discovery

npr.pngMy buddy Alan Coffey, one of my biggest supporters, shot my this story from NPR about Ingrid Michaelson, an unsigned music talent who was discovered through MySpace and now has had songs on successful shows such as Grey’s Anatomy. Sure, there’s more to marketing your music then just having a MySpace page, but it’s the first step to changing your career, as Ingrid points out in her Interview.

Thanks again, Alan.

Lefsetz On Why You Shouldn’t Sign To A Major Label

letter.png

A few weeks ago I was turned on to The Lefsetz Letter, a blog that covers the current state of the music industry. The Lefsetz Letter is run by Bob Lefsetz, and has been published in one form or another for over 20 years. Yesterday they ran a great article that I hope every aspiring musician should sit down and really let sink in to their heads.

Pearl Jam – Stone Gossard

Ah yes, Stone Gossard, one of PJ’s founding fathers. Hopefully, everyone saw the Jeff Ament post, so you should already know about Green River, Mother Love Bone, Singles, etc. However, I did forget to mention that Green River was fronted by Mark Arm of Mudhoney fame.

stone gossardStone is obviously a huge part of Pearl Jam, besides being an underrated guitarist. He wrote the music for 8 of the 11 tracks on Ten. He’s also written or co-written the tracks such as:
